Susan Siderman is in her 70's and ran the UAE Healthy Kidney 10k run on May 12th and finished it. The same morning I shot the beautiful light shot in an earlier post. Lauren Mantel was training for the half marathon in Brooklyn and also successfully finished that race. I recreated the lighting from May 12th with Lauren so she was back lit with a long shadow coming out in front of her and then used fill light from the sun to light her face. It's hard to see most of that in the shot because the image was silhouetted but you get a sense of it from the modeling on her calves and the hair light.

Gorgeous play of Light and Shadow in Central Park

What's special about this shot is that even though the sun is behind the runners, they are fully lit from the front. This spectacular lighting condition came about from a fluke of timing. The Sun was behind them and high enough above their heads so it wasn't flaring my lens, but low enough that it was casting the long shadows on the ground. In the spot that I go this shot the sun was also exactly hitting the Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle, probably half a mile away, and turning the glass sheathed building into a giant mirror that was shining it's light right back at us and lighting the runners. The result was great rim and hair lighting and long shadows with perfect full fill on all the participants. I love when coincidence and timing create amazing light and shadow dances like this.

Daters for the NY Post

This was last night at Islero. I'm using multiple radio slaved flash units for some of the lighting effects. Not sure if I'm crazy about this when I can only sidelight as was the case here where the couple was in a corner booth. It created some fairly harsh shadows. Works much better for me when I have some room to back light the subject and create some hair light and rim light. In any case these guys Claire Coleman and Anthony Adamo where just a blast to photograph. They were really comfortable with the camera, each other and having fun and came up with a bunch of great posing ideas and expressions.
